Hello…
I’m Chloe, an End-of-Life doula, death educator and writer (you can find my writing over at Death & Birds). I also have the great fortune of caring for baby birds at a Wildlife Rescue centre—that’s me there, getting yelled at by a couple of adolescent Swallows.
My journey into death work has been a long and winding one, perhaps beginning as early as age three with the death of my mother. Wrestling with the concept of death from such a young age fostered a connection and curiosity that has never left me. For a long time, I struggled to separate grief from death, though I now understand grief as more closely related to love—an understanding that has given me the courage to dive more deeply into the grieving process, recognising it as an act of love.
Every death I have encountered, whether personally or professionally, has taught me profound lessons, and has made clear that life is an extraordinary gift, far from guaranteed. My reverence for life and deep respect for the process of death make me well-suited as a doula. I approach my work with people at the end of their lives with the utmost seriousness, recognising that dying is a journey we can take only once.
I've also come to appreciate the immense value in addressing our mortality long before it’s our time to die. Death phobia is so prevalent in Western culture and it too often prevents preparation for this inevitable event. I have seen, time and again, that a gentle embracing of our mortality leads to a greater appreciation and love for life.
